Following last year's successful introduction of the green bin
composting service to the Bournes and Manhood Peninsula areas, the
Council is set to roll out the scheme to a greater area of the
Chichester District.
From September 2007, over 37,000 residents living in Chichester,
Midhurst, Petworth, Easebourne, Tangmere, Boxgrove, Oving, Lavant,
Fishbourne, Mundham, Runcton and Merston will have access to the
service, representing more than two thirds of all households in the
District. Over 1,000 applications for the new service have already been
received, with more joining each week.
In September 2006,
Chichester District Council launched its green bin composting service
to the Bournes and Manhood Peninsula areas of the District, providing
residents with wheeled bins. By the start of the service, over 2,300
households had joined the service. Since that time, a further 800 have
signed up. Now 1 in 6 homes use the service and so far, more than 900
tonnes of garden waste have been collected and composted.
The
garden waste collected is transported locally to the Woodhorn Group in
Tangmere, where it is turned into compost and sold under the Earth
Cycle brand.
"The first service introduction was very popular
and our customer targets have already been exceeded. We hope the second
phase will be equally as popular. This new service will help reduce the
amount of waste going to landfill and will boost the Council's
recycling rate to over 40% by 2009," said Councillor Pieter Montyn, the
District Council's Environment Portfolio Holder.
Residents
still wishing to use the service are advised to complete and return
their application forms (which they should already have received), as
soon as possible. Should anyone require another copy of the application
form, they should contact Chichester District Council's Service
Development team, on (01243) 534619, or email
