One Month Until England Goes Smokefree PDF Print E-mail

With just one month to go until the Smokefree laws come into effect, Chichester District Council's new Smokefree Team are providing help, support and advice for everyone preparing for the ban.

The council has employed two Smokefree Support Officers, who can help people by discussing their situation over the phone, by email or with a personal visit. Chichester District Council can also supply 'no smoking' signs for free, or they are available from Smokefree England via the website.

The Smokefree Team are holding two advice sessions, for people to drop in and meet the team, ask questions and pick up free signage and other resources. On 11 June, from 12 pm – 2 pm, they will be at East Pallant House in the Committee Rooms. On 15 June, the team will have a stall at the Farmers' Market in the Chichester City Centre.

Enclosed, or substantially enclosed, public places, work buildings and work vehicles will be required to be smokefree from 1 July onwards and must display the correct 'no smoking' signs. These are to make it clear where people can and cannot smoke.

It will be against the law to smoke in enclosed or partially enclosed places such as pubs, bars, nightclubs, cafes and restaurants, membership clubs and shopping centres. This will also include village halls, churches, and communal areas such as in blocks of flats or halls of residence.

People found smoking in prohibited areas will be liable to a fine and managers and owners of premises may be fined or prosecuted. It is therefore important that businesses make the most of the support available, and prepare in good time.

Please contact either Melanie or Colin by telephoning 01243 785166 and asking for the Smokefree Team or email a team member; This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it Smokefree Compliance Officer or This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it Smokefree Support Officer.

For further information, visit the national website www.smokefreeengland.co.uk or telephone the national helpline on 0800 169 1697.
