Roger Poole brings us a New Year update on Petworth and Bognor Angling Clubs latest news..............
"Its a new year but for those of us who pursue the noble art of angling, its a further three months before our year ends, or should I say season, by which time winter should be drawing to a close, and spring not far away, that's what should be happening if mother nature has its way, but according to those who know better then perhaps the pecking order may be in for a slight jolt or to, providing that is you believe the experts. Certainly the milder weather has provided conditions ideal for coarse angling, so far the lack of frost and snow has enabled us to spend more time by the rivers and lakes without freezing and the fish have continued to feed as they would during Autumn, even carp who can go into a mild state of hibernation when its cold are still active and recently I witnessed a local carp angler catching carp from the surface with floating bread, a not unusual ploy in summer, but in winter its most unusual.
Looking back over the last year its been a mainly good year to enjoy coarse angling, with a long hot summer the countryside was at its best, our lovely rivers the Rother and Arun all provided good quality fish of most varieties, certainly barbel have flourished in the Rother, positive proof that the work undertaken a few years ago to provide spawning grounds at Coultershaw along with the loop improvements underlines the importance of maintaining and investing in our local waters, it benefits not only the fish stock but all creatures and plant life who rely and live by our rivers and lakes. The Rother can be one of the most frustrating rivers to fish, but that's the challenge of angling, even on days when the conditions are ideal you can have a blank spell, on other days it's as if Mr Crabtree was standing beside you conducting affairs so as to see the fish were coming thick and fast, so once again top marks to the Rother where surely six pound chub, to match that of the Dorset Stour will be quite common. In the tidal Arun are some of the largest bream shoals, roach stocks continue to improve and barbel have been caught in increasing numbers, so next year we anticipate continued good fishing in some of the loveliest countryside we are lucky to have on our doorsteps.
This new year will see the final phase to amalgamate Bognor and District Freshwater Angling Club and Petworth Angling Club, under the one name Petworth and Bognor Angling Club so as to provide local anglers with good quality angling from some of the best venues to meet the demands of both match and pleasure anglers. The new club will be up and ready for the new season and we very much look forward to this as we have plans to suit coarse anglers of all ages."
