Members of Chichester District Youth Council are warning people about the dangers of alcohol through a short film that they wrote, directed, produced and starred in, called ‘Hammered’. The film will have its premiere screening at The Venue in Chichester on 17 January 2007.
As well as seeing the hard hitting new film, special guests will be able to try on a pair of ‘boozed and confused’ goggles and also find out the reality of exactly how much they drink at home. Guests will include parents, school teachers, local Councillors and representatives from local agencies such as the Police, Fire and Rescue Service and West Sussex Primary Care Trust.
Chichester District Youth Council came up with the idea of making the film as an effective way of getting the message across to young people about safe drinking. They spent time learning various filmmaking skills, including taking part in a workshop with Matt Ashcroft and Lisa Gomer from film production company Tinyhorse Media.
West Sussex County Council Drugs and Alcohol Team helped to fund the film. Copies will be available on the night and the Youth Council are also producing a special “teachers pack” to accompany the DVD. They hope to be able to distribute this to all secondary schools in the Chichester district in February, and possibly to a wider audience at a later date.
Chichester District Youth Council is supported and funded by Chichester District Council. Councillor Keith Smith, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said,
“This has been a big project for the Youth Council and everyone is very excited about the first screening of the film. Getting the message out to people about the dangers of alcohol is a very important one. Young people in particular aren’t necessarily aware of the dangers and so this film will hopefully have an impact in terms of getting the message across. It especially makes a big difference that this film has been produced by young people for young people.’
