West Sussex County Council Trading Standards Service issued its own storm warning when 70mph winds threatened to batter the southern coastal region over the weekend. It put out a timely news flash telling householders: "Give cold callers the cold shoulder."
Lionel Barnard, County Council Cabinet Member for Public Protection, said: "Our experience from the Selsey tornado some years ago suggests such storms prove a magnet for unscrupulous traders from all over the country to converge on the storm affected areas. The work is often poor, overpriced and not guaranteed.
"Any victim of storm damage was advised not to deal with doorstep callers but to ring their insurance company in the first instance for advice.
"For any necessary emergency repairs, householders were advised to use a trader who is signed up to an approved trader scheme such as the County Council's 'Buy with Confidence'. These traders will have been vetted to ensure they provide a good service."
