Chichester District Council’s Executive Board has approved a consultation on the declaration of two proposed Air Quality Management Areas in the city. These areas are Orchard Street and St Pancras, which were identified in a recent study as breaching air quality targets.

The District Council monitors air quality at 26 locations across the district. This monitoring has revealed that levels of nitrogen dioxide at Orchard Street and St Pancras have breached UK standards.
Consultation on the proposed Air Quality Management Areas will now take place with adjacent residents and landowners, the highway authority and other interested parties. All responses are requested by Tuesday 5 December 2006.
Within 18 months of the Air Quality Management Areas being declared, Chichester District Council will write an Air Quality Action Plan, in partnership with West Sussex County Council. This will recommend measures to improve the air quality in the two areas.
Councillor Heather Caird, Portfolio Holder for Health, said:
“The declaration of an Air Quality Management Area on Chichester’s inner ring road will lead to actions being put in place, in partnership with the County Council, which we hope will have a positive impact on local air quality.”
