You thought the infamous wheelie bin uproar had gone away; well let’s hope it has although the residents of Manhood and the Bourns now have the option of a third wheelie bin for green garden waste. We like the idea, more on this initiative.................

Chichester District Council is now collecting green waste from over 2,600 residents in the Manhood and Bourne areas. Phase one of the new scheme, which started in September, has been extremely popular, beating the Council’s target to provide a service to 1,500 households by March 2007.

In the first five weeks of the service, the Council collected 128 tonnes of green waste, well on track to meet the target of composting at least 430 tonnes by March 2007.

Chichester District residents have also exceeded the national recycling target. Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) results showed that households in England recycled 27% of their waste during 2005/06. Residents in the Chichester District are achieving a rate of 31%.

Councillor Andrew Shaxson, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said,

“The new Green Waste Composting Service, coupled with the successful twin bin service, will play an important role in meeting the target of achieving a combined household waste recycling and composting rate in excess of 40%, by 2010. “

The Green Waste is collected fortnightly, and residents can choose from a 140 litre, 240 litre or 360 litre bin. The charges vary depending on the size of the bin. The waste is taken to a local composting facility in Tangmere, where it is turned into a range of quality peat-free compost products. These products are available under the ‘Earth Cycle’ brand direct from The Woodhorn Group or from local garden centres and builders’ merchants . For more information, telephone Woodhorn direct on (01243) 544365, or visit their website www.earthcycle.co.uk

If you live in the Manhood or Bourne areas and would like more information about the service and charges, or would like to order your bin (debit/credit card payments accepted), please telephone (01243) 534619.
