Singing sea shanties, watching a puppet
show and making a bird box are just some of the family activities on
offer at Chichester Harbour this half-term.
The
activities are part of the Conservancy’s year round Programme of Guided
Walks & Activities. Extra sessions are held during the school
holidays to introduce young ones and their families to the Chichester
Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This
half-term, the fun starts on Saturday 16 February with a Sea Shanties
sing-along. The session aim at families with children 5-12 years old
starts at 10am and includes a look into the history of these nautical
tunes. There is then an opportunity to have a go at playing some jug
band instruments and singing. No musical experience is necessary - just
a willingness to join in and have fun!
For
younger ones (under 5s), there will be an indoor puppet show on Monday
18 February. In year’s gone by the harbour area was rife with
smugglers. The puppets will bring the story to life and give lots of
opportunities for booing and hissing at the baddies and cheering on the
good guys. After the show there will be a chance to make your own
finger puppet to take home.
As we get
towards bird nesting season, people are looking to put up bird boxes in
their gardens. Rather than buying one, why not have a go at making your
own this year. On Wednesday 20 February, the harbour rangers will be
helping you assemble bird box kits which you can then take home or
donate for putting up in harbourside woodlands.
Judi
Darley who organises these events for Chichester Harbour said ‘these
sessions will help bring to life the history and wildlife of this
special place in a fun way.’
All of these events will be held at the Harbour Education Centre at Dell Quay. For more details please see www.conservancy.co.uk or call the Harbour Office on 01243 512301. There is a small charge for some sessions and booking may be necessary.
