Havant says ‘no’ to ‘pay as you throw’ PDF Print E-mail

A definite "no" has been given by Havant Borough Council on charging residents to “pay as they throw” their rubbish.

Councils in England have been given the power to introduce pilot schemes to charge households according to the amount of rubbish they bin, but plans to charge householders in the borough have been strongly opposed by Havant Borough Council.

Councillor David Collin, Portfolio holder for Environment said “While we welcome the idea of encouraging recycling, we are happy with the way waste is collected and recycled in Havant and will not be charging residents to pay any more taxes.

“We are proud of our recycling rates, which are currently at the national target of 30%. The introduction of enhanced recycling services to all households has resulted in our performance over the last two years rising from 21%.

“Should the Government make such charges compulsory, then we would have no choice, but so far the indication is that councils will have the ability to decide for themselves”.
