Today Solent Coastguard have dealt with 4 Pan Pans, (radio urgency calls) and a number of 999 emergency calls involving 2 dismastings, 2 groundings and a head injury sustained by a female on a yacht involved in a racing regatta in the Solent.

The high winds and sea state had been well forecast on local and national television and on the met office internet site.

Solent Coastguard Watch Officer Katharine Piggin, said,

The Coastguard cannot stress strongly enough the need to take heed of forecast weather conditions and if intending to take to the water in such adverse conditions that skippers and their crews ensure that they are prepared adequately for sea and any eventuality that may occur.
