An e-petition set up by West Sussex County Council as part of the fight to save West Sussex hospitals from downgrading, will close on Friday November 9.

More than 10,600 residents have added their names to the e-petition, which can be found at www.fightforthefuture.org.uk, together with County Councillors and West Sussex MPs.

County Council Leader Henry Smith said: “I would urge anyone who hasn’t yet signed the e-petition to do so by November 9. Countywide, people are showing they are against any reduction in services.

“West Sussex Primary Care Trust’s (PCT) public consultation on the Fit for the Future proposals closes on Wednesday November 14 – we must all make sure we have had our say.”

The e-petition is protesting at the Fit for the Future options which could lead to a loss of services at the three main county hospitals: St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, Worthing Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.

The petition says:

“We the undersigned petition the Health Secretary to instruct the Primary Care Trust for West Sussex to come forward with acceptable options for health service provision which better reflect the needs and concerns of residents in place of the current charade of consulting on proposals to downgrade hospitals and accident and emergency facilities.”

Residents who don’t have web access but would like to sign the e-petition can do so at their local library.

At a meeting earlier this month the County Council agreed a Notice of Motion rejecting the Fit for the Future options, asking the PCT to provide improved local community facilities before reviewing proposals for major general hospitals and other significant facilities in the county.

Henry added: “As a County Council we are united in our stance: downgrading is not an option for any of our hospitals. We want the PCT to come back with a realistic option for the people in West Sussex for acute health services.”
