The foundations of Chichester Library are strong enough for a lift to be installed. That’s the verdict after two 10-metre deep boreholes and two examination pits were were dug outside the Library to examine the existing foundations. The geotechnical survey has shown that the project, which includes an extension, can go ahead. Now an application for planning permission is to be submitted before the work can go ahead. Installing a lift will give full access to the first floor.

When the extension is open everyone will be able to use
The main local studies collection which includes a range of local maps and films of local papers dating back to 1746.
Phone books for the whole country
Extensive reference collection
The main area of study space
Dedicated electronic Library computers.

Since the Library was built in 1967, access to the upper floor has been restricted for people with mobility difficulties including parents with children in pushchairs.

“We are well on the way to resolving the access problems which have faced Chichester Library for so long,” said Mike Coleman, Deputy Leader of West Sussex County Council, who oversees the Library Service.

“Now we can start preparing the detailed design work to build the lift at the side of the Library.”

A team of consultants is developing a plan for the lift, and other access issues. Nearer the time an exhibition of the plans will take place in the Library.
