Over 100 local athletes have so far registered to swim, cycle and run
their way to victory, in the first Chichester Triathlon, which takes
place on Sunday 22 July, from 7.00 am until 12.30 pm.
The Chichester Triathlon is being organised by Westgate Leisure and
the Sport and Leisure Team at Chichester District Council. It will
start at Chichester Westgate Leisure Centre's pool with a 600 m swim.
This will be followed by a 42 km challenging bike course and a 10 km
out and back flat run along Centurion Way.
The event is
sponsored by Nature's Way Foods, Chichester University and Wileys;
Chichester College is also supporting the event.
Westgate
Leisure need to sign up 80 volunteers to help ensure that the day runs
smoothly. The volunteers are needed to register athletes before the
start of the race, count the required number of lengths for each
swimmer and marshal at different points along the bike and run sections
of the race. They do not need any previous experience, as they will be
fully briefed before the event. All volunteers will also receive a
goody bag and a t-shirt.
Councillor Nick Thomas, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Sport, said,
"This
is a great opportunity for local athletes to take part in a local
event, and may be a chance for them to try something new if they have
never competed in a triathlon before. We are also hoping that the event
will attract national triathletes, who can come and see what Chichester
has to offer."
Race entry costs £30 for British Triathlon
Association members and £37 for non-members. Group entries are also
welcome, with each team member completing a different section of the
course. Group entry costs £50.
Application forms can be
downloaded from Chichester District Council's website, on Westgate
Leisure's pages, or picked up at Chariots II reception at Westgate.
Applications will close on 13 July or as soon as all 300 places are
filled.
