Residents of Havant have the chance to share their views or to ask questions about Havant Borough Council and the way it is run, at one of three “Have your Say” events.

This annual event has been extended and is being hosted at two additional venues around the borough, rather than in previous years only being at the civic offices.

Councillor Tony Briggs, Leader of the council says, “Previous years have brought a variety of questions and views from residents. It gives people the chance to speak directly to those who make the decisions in a friendly and open environment. I thought it was important to try and take this event out to the community in order to make it more accessible.”

To have your chance to hear how the council sets its budget; its vision for the future; and to question Havant Borough Council’s Executive Councillors you will need to submit your questions in advance and you also need to indicate what event you wish to attend.

Events are being held as follows:-

Monday 24 November 2008 at Civic Offices, Havant, from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.

Tuesday 25 November 2008 at Anders House, Milton Road, Waterlooville, from 7.00pm to 9.00pm.

Monday 8 December 2008 at Hayling Island Community Centre, from 7.00pm to 9.00pm.

For further details on how to submit your question and reserve your place please use this link>>, or call the Democratic Services Team 023 9244 6231.

A taste of the Continent at Westgate

Customers at Westgate Leisure Chichester will soon be able to enjoy Costa Coffee products in modern surroundings when the new-look Café Ravenna is opened to customers on Monday 3rd Novmeber from midday.

Councillor John Ridd, Chairman of Chichester District Council will officially open the café on Monday at 11am following extensive building works which have transformed the former bar, eating area and restaurant into one large, open-plan café.

The extensive £500,000 project also provides new function rooms available to hire. The small function room accommodates up to 8 people with the larger taking a maximum of 32. The function rooms are ideal for training, functions and parties, with reception and terrace facilities. All areas are fully accessible, including two sports therapy rooms offering a comprehensive range of sports injury treatments.

Visitors can now make the most of a menu offering salads, paninis, smoothies and bottled beers and wines. Fans of latte, cappuccino, espresso, americano, or traditional filter will find all they need with a range of Costa Coffee drinks. Sit back in comfortable sofas to enjoy the caffeine boost while others make the most of the continental-style café seating or benches for family dining. Or, if the weather is fine, enjoy your drinks al fresco on the new outdoor terrace.

Councillor Nick Thomas, Portfolio Holder for Sport and Culture at Chichester District Council said: "This development, the latest stage in the modernisation of Westgate, offers our customers the very best in the way of catering. Café Ravenna will become a popular place to meet, relax and have something to eat or drink after a session in the pool, fitness suite or studio."

Westgate celebrated its 21st birthday in 2008 and is now looking ahead to many more years of developing services that are fit for purpose and provide value for money. Café Ravenna marks an important stage in that development.

Residents are urged to continue recycling

Residents in Chichester District are being urged to continue recycling as much waste as possible, despite reports of difficulties in recycling markets.

In recent weeks there have been media reports about the problems faced by councils and the recycling industry, due to the credit crunch and recession.

The world is experiencing a financial crisis, which is affecting many sectors, including manufacturing, where a significant reduction in demand for goods is being felt. This in turn has hit the recycling sector with less demand for certain recyclable materials, and sharp falls in some material values.

There have been reports that in a few parts of the country, councils are beginning to stockpile materials until market conditions improve. This is not the case here in Chichester and in West Sussex.

"I can assure our residents that all the materials they save for recycling, be it cans, plastic bottles, paper, cardboard, glass jars and bottles, are all being sent for recycling", says Councillor Pieter Montyn, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, at Chichester District Council. "We do not want residents in any way to be deterred from recycling due to news reports of some councils facing problems. All materials collected here are being passed to recycling reprocessors as always and are being turned into new products."

"Chichester District residents have been among the top recyclers in the country over the last three years. Last year we recycled, and diverted from landfill, over 16,000 tonnes of household waste. By continuing to place all wanted recyclable materials in the burgundy bins, and at the great many public recycling banks around the district, they can carry on being recycling leaders with the confidence that all the materials are being recycled."
