Low flying and loud aircraft! 1 Year, 3 Months ago
Hi everyone,

I thought I would try and get the forums going with some discussion about the low flying aircraft that use the skies above the Harbour.

Recently I have been woken up after midnight on a weekday by a Chinook Helicopter from RAF Odiham near Alton in Hampshire. It was hovering above fields close to my house.

I understand the Army, Navy and RAF need to train to keep us well defended, but why were they doing this activity close to residential property after midnight? at the time it had been dark for a good few hours so they don't really have an excuse on that front. This has happened several times over the last few years and also during winter when it gets dark at around 4pm, so why should we have to have our sleep disturbed? I have a job to do as well and in fact we all have to play our part in keeping the economy growing!

Could the Chinooks go somewhere else?

Well ideally their _base_ ought to be relocated to somewhere like Dartmoor or even Exmoor. If they want to train at night I dont have a issue with that, my issue is with the weird times of night they feel they need to operate and thier choices of venue. A lot of the noise from these aircraft comes from banked turns at speed, I think this kind of operation could easily be carried out over the English Channel if they must practice late at night in the dark.

It seems that a local land owner has given permission for low flying, I would like to know why?

Other people I know have had a lot of trouble from aerobatic planes from Goodwood, perhaps we could have your thoughts on my rant here and other airbourne pests!

RANT ENDS!

Stephen

I can empathise with you feelings on this topic, I seem to be living under a permenant world war 2 re-enactment area with some aerobatics thrown in. I understand that if you fly a plane your first inclination is to loop the loop over all of your friends. This would be great if we ccould identify everybody and ship them to dogger bank or one of the less friendly sea areas on one of the new prison ships.
I was standing at the bottom of the garden last year when some sort of fighter painted with an American star came past at about 30 feet off the ground, I wanted to contact someone to say that just because your air_frame_ was conceived and constructed across the herring pond, it is not compulsory to behave like John Wayne.
I have susequently discovered that the Civil aviation authority can be contacted by ordinary people like me, and a complaint can be raised, which has temporarily stopped me developing a noise seeking dirty bomb in the garden shed.

bloomin planes, who do they think they are? We were relaxing in our garden last weekend when we had two planes within half an hour of each other doing stunts, we also had a low flying helicopter buzzing around for twenty minutes. It is time the local council put some restrictions in place against this and Goodwood airfield! This selfish bahavior is not on.

I have just seen this thread and thought I would also vent my anger at this very selfish pastime. Yesterday I was enjoying a nice and relaxed afternoon pottering around my garden doing a few jobs when out of the sky came the roar of an aerobatic plane. He was carrying out all sorts of stunts very close to my house and the noise shattered the lovely autumn tranquility I was enjoying, do these people even consider other people? it seems not. Why don't they go out to sea to do their stunts? if it is becuase of safety - why are they doing over peoples houses?

Hi,

I would like to add my name to the list of angry residents who are fed up with the selfish behavior of a few plane owners!

Also the Chinooks from Odiham are to loud.

Well it must be spring now as the first nice day of weather and the skies above my house were like a scene from the battle of britain, I wonder whether any of these pilots have thought how loud their silly games are for the people on the ground trying to enjoy their gardens at this time of the year! Selfish behavior by a minority of people.
